Preparing for Summer Storms with a Baby
The hottest months can bring some of the most dangerous storm systems. As waters reach their warmest temperatures in recorded history, it looks to be an unpredictable season ahead for much of our country. While scary, you can have several items on hand to prepare for a hurricane, tropical storm, or other severe weather occurrence.
As a parent your instincts are to protect your offspring, no matter the cost, and when we are presented with uncontrollable situations, it can be easy to panic or not be 100% prepared. Taking the time now to stock up on necessities for your entire family will have you feeling less stressed once the storm warnings start rolling in.
The first thing to know is that you are not a hero by sticking out a severe storm. When in doubt, pack your go-bags in the trunk and head to safer grounds. It is always a smart option. If it looks safe to stay put, or a storm arises quickly, it is important to have things easily accessible and ready to handle everything from power outages to road blockages, and everything in between.
Family (Summer) Storm Prep
Invest Now
Investing your money in key items may stretch the budget, but having these few items on hand during a storm may keep you sane, cool, and somewhat comfortable. Consider purchasing:
- a generator (whole house or a size that can keep your fridge on during a power outage)
- berkey water filter - a stand alone filter that clears and strips water to make it healthy to drink, cook, or bathe with.
- gas cans (full, of course)
- storm shutters
Create an Emergency Kit
Put together a well-stocked emergency kit that includes essentials such as:
- non-perishable food
- a non-electric can-opener
- several days’ worth of water (ideally a week’s worth per person)
- batteries
- flashlights (1-2 per person)
- portable phone chargers (several, full charged)
- diapers/wipes (1 weeks’ worth)
- formula (if needed)
- medications
- first aid supplies
- baby comfort items (blanket, pacifier, etc)
- weather/fire-proof box with birth certificates, social security cards and other important personal documents
Stay Informed
Stay informed about weather forecasts and any potential emergencies in your area. Sign up for alerts from local authorities and have a reliable source of information, such as a weather radio or a weather app on your phone.
Have a Plan
Develop a detailed emergency plan that outlines what you will do in different scenarios, such as evacuation or sheltering in place. Make sure everyone in your household is familiar with the plan, including how to communicate and where to meet up in case of separation.
Remember to fill bathtubs with water and not to open the fridge or freezer.
Pack an Additional Go-Bag
In addition to your emergency kit, prepare a separate travel bag specifically catered to your family with items like comfort items, toys, and any special needs you or your baby may have. This bag should be ready to grab and go in case you need to evacuate quickly.
Practice Emergency Drills
Regularly practice emergency drills with your family, including your baby. This will help everyone feel more prepared and comfortable with what to do in case of an actual emergency.
Stay Calm
Remember that your kids feed off of your energy. Typically, the storm will pass, damage will be minimal, and the power will come back on within a short timeframe. Try to take a deep breath and ride the winds out with boardgames, shadow puppet stories, books, and snuggles.
